Background of the Study:
Flooding is a recurrent natural disaster that poses significant health risks, particularly in regions with inadequate infrastructure. In Jigawa State, seasonal floods have become increasingly frequent due to erratic rainfall patterns and climate change. Floodwaters not only cause immediate injuries and fatalities but also create long-term public health hazards by contaminating water supplies, spreading waterborne diseases, and disrupting sanitation systems (Mustapha, 2023). The inundation of communities leads to an increased risk of outbreaks such as cholera, dysentery, and leptospirosis, as stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for pathogens.
The socioeconomic impact of floods further exacerbates the health risks. Displacement of communities, loss of property, and disruption of livelihoods contribute to psychological stress and reduced access to healthcare services. Vulnerable populations, particularly in rural areas of Jigawa State, are at heightened risk due to limited access to emergency services and poor post-disaster recovery mechanisms (Aminu, 2024). In addition, flood-related damages to infrastructure often hinder the delivery of essential health services, compounding the adverse health outcomes.
While government and humanitarian organizations have initiated flood control and emergency response programs, there remains a gap in understanding the full spectrum of flood-related health risks in Jigawa State. Localized research is needed to assess the immediate and long-term health impacts of floods, evaluate the effectiveness of current interventions, and develop strategies to mitigate future risks (Ibrahim, 2025). This study will analyze the health consequences of flooding, considering both direct effects such as injury and indirect effects such as disease outbreaks, to provide a comprehensive evaluation of flood-related health risks.
Statement of the Problem :
Flooding in Jigawa State poses a major public health challenge, yet there is a lack of comprehensive data on its health impacts. Seasonal floods lead to widespread contamination of water sources and the disruption of sanitation services, contributing to the increased incidence of waterborne diseases. The immediate effects of flooding include injuries and fatalities, while the long-term consequences, such as persistent outbreaks of cholera and dysentery, continue to strain local healthcare resources (Garba, 2023). Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and low-income households, bear the brunt of these adverse effects, as their limited access to healthcare exacerbates the overall health burden.
Despite the implementation of various flood control measures and emergency response initiatives, the frequency and severity of floods continue to rise due to climate change and inadequate infrastructure. The lack of early warning systems and effective disaster preparedness further compounds the problem, leaving communities unprepared for the health emergencies that follow flood events (Saleh, 2024). The fragmented nature of existing interventions, coupled with insufficient post-disaster recovery strategies, has resulted in a cycle of recurrent health crises during flood periods.
This study seeks to fill the gap by systematically evaluating the health risks associated with flooding in Jigawa State. By identifying the direct and indirect health impacts, the research will provide evidence-based recommendations to improve emergency preparedness, enhance water and sanitation infrastructure, and develop targeted health interventions to mitigate the consequences of future flood events.
